Muli wa Kyendo’s 5 Point Pledge on How I’ll Treat My Friends on Facebook
Ladies and gentlemen, I am overwhelmed and overjoyed by the many friends that have joined me on Facebook. In our place we say “to know something is to try it!” Now I have tried Facebook and I know its effectiveness in connecting friends.
Many of you have expressed your hopes and expectations. On my part, I make this 5 point pledge will adapted from a friend as follows:
1. I will have a mission. Of course, my mission is to promote investing and culture in Africa. I believe that only great cultures support great economies and only great economies support great cultures. My evidence? The old Egyptian Pharaoh, Akhnaton (1372-1354 BC). Akhnaton, the greatest of the Pharaohs, introduced cultural and economic reforms whose effects we live with even today. A book before me says his reign “left behind eternal spiritual and inspirational writings and other works of art which have continued warm the hearts of many.”
Just to illustrate, he allowed Pharaohs to be depicted by artists as the humans that they were. Thus it was Akhnaton who started realistic art. He encouraged drama and initiated the worship of one God. In deed, some authorities say, Moses, the great Hebrew leader, was a follower of Akhnaton, a reason he had to flee Egypt on the death of his mentor. But that is another story. The point is that as the Egyptian culture developed, the economy flourished. Modern examples abound. Culture allows human beings in societies to rationalize a purposeful and common exploitation of natural resources for better fulfillment of human needs.
2. I’ll be genuine. I believe we all want to connect with real people. I this regard, I will be as real and genuine as possible. It means that I will present myself and my thoughts as I they come to me. Some will be faulty and even mistaken, but that’s just part of being human. All human beings have shortcomings and vulnerability.
3. I’ll Focused on adding value. Adding value to me, means producing work of quality so that it’s beneficial to my friends. Adding value is producing work that meets some – if not all (an impossible task, but a noble goal to strive to attain) the needs as expressed by those of you who have sent messages.
4. I’ll be plain. To be plain is to be clear, to be transparent. I will state my position when I like something and when I don’t like. I will not hide in obscurity and mystification.
5. And finally, I’ll be interested in you. I believe friendship is reciprocal. So, I will be interested in you even as I expect you to be interested in me. One way of doing this is to stop pontificating and to start listening to what you say. And that is what I am going to do now. I am going to stop here until next time. May you all have very, very, prosperous and joyous 2010!
