How rich is President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya?

President Mwai Kibaki is one of those people who silently hold many records. He is the longest serving member of parliament, having been continuously re-elected for a record 50 years. He is the first Vice President to have been demoted to a minister and still held on. And he is one of the few members of parliament who were in the first independent Kenya parliament in 1963. And now it turns out that he is also, despite appearances to contrary, one of the wealthiest people that Citizen TV describes as the people “ who own Kenya.”

The first inkling that Kibaki’s wealth may be more than Kenyans assume was given when a fight broke out between the Kibaki’s and a World Bank Country Representative. It turned out that the World Bank is leased a house in the prestigious Nairobi’s Muthaiga Estate by President Kibaki, and that, in fact, the house adjoins the President’s residence.

Billionaires

But how much does he really own? According to Citizen TV, Kibaki’s wealth goes into billions of US dollars. Among the things listed by the station are large scale farms, many of them in hundreds of acres, in various areas of the country including Nakuru,Nyeri, Laikipia and Naivasha.

Mr. Kibaki also owns a substantial amount of real estate property in Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru to mention only a few towns. Together with business tycoon Chris Kirubi, he owns the prestigious International House in the central business district of Nairobi.

Companies in which President Mwai Kibaki owns substantial shares include Kenya’s leading banks – Barclays and the Standard Chartered, the Housing Finance and the Nation Newspapers, Kenya’s leading media house.

If you add to this the fact that Mr. Kibaki’s salary as President of Kenya is one of the highest in the world – at Shs 2.5 million (about $35,714) per month, you can see why he is among the people who truly own Kenya.

So Who Owns Kenya?

And by the way, the series is exposing other facts. For example, that only Kikuyus have made millions and billions of shillings, thanks to the late President Jomo Kenyatta’s government that favored the tribe. So far – and the program has run weekly for months – only one Mkamba, John Harun Mwau and two Kalenjins, former President Daniel arap Moi and his son, Gideon, have been featured.

Do you see why we need a new constitutional arrangement?
